Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which One Does Your Yard Actually Need?

Updated: 23 hours ago
You've got a stump sitting in your yard. Maybe it's from a tree that came down in a storm, or one you had taken out a few years back and just never dealt with. Either way, you want it gone.
The question most Southern Minnesota homeowners ask us is: "Should I grind it or remove it?"
Both options get the job done. They just get it done differently. Here's what you need to know.
What Stump Grinding Does
Stump grinding uses a machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump down below ground level. The stump itself stays in the ground — the roots, the bulk of it — but the visible portion is eliminated. What's left is a pile of wood chips and a shallow depression in the soil.
That wood chip debris can be used as mulch or hauled away, depending on your preference.
Stump grinding is faster, less invasive, and costs less than full removal. For most residential yards in the Owatonna, Faribault, and Mankato area, it's the right call.
Grinding works well when:
You want to replant grass over the area
The stump is in a lawn you don't want torn up
You're not building anything on that spot
You need a cost-effective solution
One thing to keep in mind: because the roots stay in the ground, they will slowly decompose over the next several years. That process is harmless, but it can cause the soil to settle slightly as it happens.
What Stump Removal Does
Full stump removal means pulling the entire stump out of the ground, roots and all. It's a heavier job. It requires more equipment, more time, and it leaves a larger hole to fill in.
The upside is a completely clean site. No roots left behind, no settling over time. If you're pouring a driveway, building a garage addition, or doing significant grading work on that section of property, full removal gives you a clean slate to work from.
Removal makes sense when:
You're planning new construction or hardscaping on that exact spot
You need the root system fully gone for drainage or utility work
A contractor has asked for a fully cleared site before they start
For most straightforward residential jobs, full removal isn't necessary. Grinding handles the result just as well and at less cost and disruption.
What About the Roots Either Way?
Whether you grind or remove, the smaller feeder roots spreading out through the soil are staying put. Those thin roots decompose naturally and don't cause any real problems. What full removal targets is the main root ball — the thick mass directly under the stump.
Which Should You Choose?
Here's a simple way to think about it:
If you're dealing with an old stump in your lawn that you want gone so you can mow the area cleanly and plant grass — stump grinding is what you need. It's the standard approach for a reason.
If you're doing significant site work and need that area built on or significantly regraded — talk to us about full removal. We do both.
